Netflix’s “The Great Flood” Explained + Plot Order and Interpretations

❗️[SPOILER WARNING – Please read only AFTER you watched the film on Netflix.]❗️

➡️ 1st Part: The Great Flood 🌊
— This is the premise and initial plot of the story: The flood water went out of control to the point of reaching the top floors of a building. Anna tries to escape with her son, as they try to survive Earth’s greatest disaster.

➡️ 2nd Part: AI Plot Twist ☄️
— Ja In (the son) is revealed to be an AI model that resulted from Anna and her superior’s research and the creation of the Emotion Engine.

➡️ WHAT IS THE EMOTION ENGINE?
— It is basically an AI model that allows AI to feel human emotions.

➡️ PLOT ORDER
1. Ja In, an AI, is created and becomes a test subject for the Emotion Engine.
2. Anna “adopts” Ja In.
3. Events unfold that lead to The Great Flood, threatening humanity’s extinction.
4. Anna and Ja In are captured.
5. Anna goes into outer space to continue work on the Emotion Engine but is struck by a meteorite.
6. Anna volunteers as a test subject by having her memories extracted for the Emotion Engine’s learning.

Test subjects and their memories:
• Anna — Mother
• Ja In — Son

7. This marks the beginning of Part Two, where Anna and Ja In are trapped in a time loop and simulation until Anna finds Ja In.

➡️ THE TIME LOOP:
— The film is like a simulation game in a time loop. It keeps repeating every time the character “dies” and goes back to a checkpoint after each reset like a video game. So, it’s like, the main character respawns until she completes her objective.

The number on her shirt most likely represents the number of times she had to repeat everything.

— It is a simulation externally, but is also a time loop for the character, Anna.

➡️ WHY THEY ARE IN A LOOP?
— For AI learning. AI learns patterns, sees and reduced errors, and gains “general knowledge” through repetition. Since the AI model is the “Emotion Engine,” the most probable main goal is for the AI to learn and perfect human emotions. This may be why Anna started to help those neighbours in need (like side quests) as she repeats each timeline.

Hence, it’s not just learning emotions but probably also learns problem solving. The number of repetition just shows how complex AI can become. This is also how AI like Chatgpt learns but via LLM.

➡️ To conclude, the first part is Anna (human) and Ja In, her (AI) son. The second part until the end is Anna and Ja In as test subjects (their memories only, no actual body) for the AI model: Emotion Engine. Anna here is no longer human, but the repetition and ending showcased how the Emotions Engine perfected the “human emotions” needed to “feel human” again.

At the end of the film, from my understanding, both of them are no longer humans but synthetic ones that completed the AI training for the Emotions Engine.

📝 NOTE: These are all my own theories and understanding of the film. Feel free to comment your own conclusions. 💖
