Korean Drama Recommendation: “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” starring Park Min Young, Park Yoo Chun, Song Joong Ki, and Yoo Ah In

Long before the members of F4 were born, in the great Sungkyunkwan University, an equal number of flowers boys reside: The Jalgeum Quartet.

The Jalgeum Quartet consists of members Lee Sun Joon, also known as Garang (portrayed by Park Yoo Chun), the ideal husband. Rich and upright, he’s a perfect gentleman with brains that matches a scholar’s. He’s the type that would never go against the law and would always choose what he believes is the right thing to do. He has values and he sticks with it. He’s a serious and studious man with rank and status that would definitely secure a lady’s future.

Moon Jae Shin (portrayed by Yoo Ah In), also known as Geol Oh, the “wild horse.” He’s your typical “bad boy” character with a hidden soft side. He may break your door, your window, and probably your whole house, but he will never break a girl’s heart once he falls in love with her. Behind his rugged style and robust strength, he’s actually a keeper who will protect the person he treasures the most.

Goo Yong Ha (portrayed by Song Joong Ki), also known as Yeorim, who is literally called the “women’s forest.” He’s a stylish playboy who loves to joke around. He’s bright and playful, an epitome of youth. He’s someone who will go shopping with you and talk more than you do. Yeorim is an expert when it comes to flattery but can also be brutally honest. This player usually stands out thanks to his pretty face and eccentric wardrobe. (He is Goo Yong Ha after all. *opens fan*)

Kim Yoon Shik (portrayed by Park Min Young), also known as Daemul, the “big thing.” Despite his feminine features and clumsiness, he’s the only one who was able to capture the beautiful gisaeng Cho Sun’s heart. He’s both intelligent and hard working. And, although he came from a humble family, the king especially chooses him to study at Sungkyunkwan University. But, wait, what if the great Daemul is actually a girl named Kim Yoon Hee?

There’s a big secret in Sungkyunkwan that can not be revealed!

Starring “Sensory Couple” actor Micky Yoochun as Lee Sun Joon, “What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?” actress Park Min Young as Kim Yoon Hee disguised as Kim Yoon Shik, “Chicago Typewriter” actor Yoo Ah In as Moon Jae Shin, and a true to life Sungkyunkwan University alumnus, “Descendants of the Sun” actor Song Joong Ki as Goo Yong Ha. The star-studded cast is about to embark on a secret journey while also keeping Yoon Hee’s identity a huge mystery among their fellow scholars. But how long can she hide her true self?

The 2010 Korean drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” is a modern-day story in a historical setting, focusing on four university students—who could pass off as F4’s ancestors—as they learn about life and love. A bit of a gender-bender in some ways, since it took a while before Sun Joon learned about Yoon Hee’s true nature while he was already falling in love with her thinking that ‘she’ is a ‘he.’ Overall, it’s a great drama that’s made up of more than one genre but is able to blend all of them well. It also showcases the early years of the main cast, who are now mostly top stars in the industry.
