Korean Drama Recommendation: “Live Up To Your Name” starring Kim Nam Gil and Kim Ah Joong

“Live Up To Your Name” is a time travel drama that features veteran stars Kim Nam Gil (from “Queen Seon Deok” as Bidam) as Heo Im and Kim Ah Joong (from “200 Pounds Beauty”) as Choi Yeon Kyung.

The drama tells the story of Heo Im, an oriental doctor during the 1500s-1600s. He developed the use of acupuncture for medical purposes during the Joseon Dynasty. And, although he was a talented doctor, it was difficult for Heo Im to easily succeed due to his background: his mother was of noble blood, but his father was a commoner.

By chance, Heo Im learns that he can travel 400 years into the future. But with one variable, his life has to be in danger to be able to pass through time.

When he first got to Seoul he met Choi Yeon Kyung, a doctor who only believes in modern medicine. Their ideas and methods initially clashed, but they soon learned to understand each other’s differences.

As Heo Im lives a double life as a runaway doctor in the past, and an oriental medicine doctor in the present, he also learns about the best practices to use in both eras. He, however, would come to a day where he can only choose between going back to Joseon, or living in Seoul.

“Live Up To Your Name” boasts of seasoned actors, a good and interesting storyline, and is probably the first Korean series to feature the life of Heo Im.
